EAST, WEST

Kamana Singh
IP COLLEGE FOR WOMEN, DU

I am made from pixels of duality
I breathe the air of binaries
When I go East, I live it.
When I go West, I love it.
I am East, I am West.

Every part of me breaks free
To the beats of thumri, ghumar and garba.
Every limb of mine grooves
To the sounds of pop, rock and jazz.
I am Holi, I am Halloween
I am East, I am West.

I pair my boots with my lehenga,
Smoking and bleeding at the same time.
I wear red bindis with my golden hair,
Cussing and praising at the same time.
I am Man, I am Woman.
I am East, I am West.

I masturbate in my dupatta.
I pray in my hat,
I am loudest when I protest.
I prefer silence when I create.
I can be Red, I can be Blue.
I am East, I am West.

I wear white when I am happy
I wear colours when I am low
I am all of this at once
And I am much more,
when I am none.
I am a rainbow, I am the thunder.
I am East, I am West.
